The best part of the venue: “The gorgeous chandelier and staircase. Also, the availability of the cabins on the property allowed for our family and closest friends to stay nearby all weekend.”

Why did you pick your venue: “The modern rustic vibe and intimate feel.”

Favorite part of your gown: “The perfect combination of sparkle and lace as well as the low back.”

Why did you pick your dress: “I always knew I wanted a ballgown and long train. I tried on practically every dress in the shop, but I kept coming back to this one. My dress made me feel beautiful and glamorous and accentuated my best features. It set the tone and was the perfect dress for a romantic and wintery New Year’s Eve wedding celebration. It blended in with the snow but sparkled perfectly in the candlelight. I wanted to feel comfortable in my dress so I could dance the night away!”

Three words to describe your day: “Modern, Intimate and Romantic”

Your inspiration for the wedding: “Even though we eloped in 2020, I knew I still wanted a wedding celebration that included our family and closest friends. I wanted the day to be extravagant where we could make our guests feel extra special and no detail would go unnoticed. When else would we ever be able to throw another New Year’s Eve party like this surrounded by everyone we love?!”

How you met: “Charles and I met at a job training. Even though we were focused on the stressful, intense, and physically exhausting training, our friendship grew. Six weeks into the training Charles had to get an appendectomy. I spent countless hours at the hospital with him, allowing us to become even closer. Five and half months later, after we completed training, I moved to San Francisco and he to Anchorage. Despite the distance we knew we had found our person. We endured a long distance relationship for 2 years, and eloped on Matanuska Glacier in June of 2020. In September of 2020 I moved to Anchorage and we started planning our NYE wedding celebration!'“

How they proposed: “Charles proposed when we were visiting my family in Detroit, MI. He had conspired with my sister to take photos and a video of the actual proposal. After dinner, with my family, we went to the Zoo Lights at the Detroit Zoo. As we passed the main fountain, my sister asked if I’d like a picture with Charles. We took a picture smiling at the camera and then Charles said, “wait one more!” And when I turned to look at him he was down on one knee!”

Any other fun memories / moments from the day: “After a full year of planning, trying to find the perfect officiant, flight cancellations, and the Pandemic, I was so nervous about everything coming together perfectly. But the wedding came together perfectly! The food was plentiful, the band kept the dance floor hopping, the photo booth was festive with a balloon arch, and the champagne was flowing. We even had sparklers and fireworks to bring in the New Year! It was such a wonderful feeling that all of guests said it was the best wedding they’d ever been too! My favorite part of our day was the ceremony. The Jewish traditions we incorporated and reciting our own vows made the ceremony feel intimate and unique.”

Vendor Spotlight | Johanna Andersen Creative

—  Johanna Andersen Creative

johannaandersencreative@gmail.com

@johannaandersencreative

Johanna started Johanna Andersen Creative, because she loves to give flowers a second life. She does floral preservation through pressing and focuses mainly on wedding bouquet preservation. She takes the bouquet (or photo of the bouquet for post-wedding preservation), presses it, and then frames it. Johanna also offers pressed flower goods, such as edible flowers for a wedding cake, etc.

We’re engaged! Now what?

I would encourage all newly engaged couples to first have a conversation about their expectations and budget for their special day. That way you can use that as a sounding board for all the decisions moving forward.

What is the ideal timeline for a bride to book your services?

It is best to book your preservation space at least 3 months before your wedding date. The only vendor I suggest making sure you have booked before you book your preservation, is your florist. It is helpful to have the inspiration for your bouquet, so I can best prepare to preserve it.

What is your price range?

Bouquet preservation start at $300. I offer different packages, with both gold frames and handmade wooden frames.

What is your favorite wedding tradition?

I love the ceremony. I don't know if that counts as a tradition, but getting to experience the love of a couple is so special.

What is one tradition you could live without?

The cake stuffing in the face moment just isn't for me.

Anything else you would like to share with our brides?

There are a variety of preservation methods, including resin and dried floral art. I'd encourage you to research which method is for you! I solely preserve via pressing, but there are plenty of other creatives who can assist in those areas. I want to ensure every bride gets her dream of a preservation, that brings their style and essence into it!

Let's talk budget!

Trust us, we get it - budgeting for your wedding can be one of the most challenging and stressful parts of wedding planning. The number one tip that we can give you is to be open with your partner, parents, and anyone else helping you pay for your special day! Start by creating a list of items that are most important to you and ones that you could live without, do your research, and be open minded.

With attire being our specialty - we want to break it down for you! This 9% will include anything that you and your partner need for your special day. Gown, tailoring, accessories, suit, and your hair and make up.

  • Our gowns average from $1,700 - 3,500, however we have gowns on either end of that price point! We take pride in being able to help as many brides as possible and be accommodating to all budgets. Be open with your stylist, we want to find you the perfect gown without adding financial stress to your wedding planning.

  • The national average for bridal tailoring ranges $300-$600. When ordering a gown, we take measurements and do our best to get you the closest to perfect size so that alterations are minor. However, not many bride’s fit the size chart exactly. Typically a bride will measure between 2-3 different sizes in different areas. This means that you will usually need some minor adjustments - a hem, adding a bustle, strap/bust adjustments. Keep in mind that almost ever single gown will need some sort of alteration.

  • Depending on your style and how you are planning on accessorizing your budget may change. We have accessories to fit all budgets - talk with your stylist and be open about what you are wanting to spend. This will help us pull the perfect pieces to finalize your dream look.

  • Hair and make up can average about $150-$600 depending on your style. This may include a trial run as well, so don’t forget to schedule that!

Gown Designer: Private Label from Bateau Bridal

Photographer: Meagan Woods

Videographer: Josh Vassar

Hair and Makeup: Brittany Hunziker

The best part of the venue: “We absolutely loved the intimate setting surrounded by Alaska’s vast beauty!”

Why did you pick your venue: “We wanted our pictures to showcase our love for the state and our adventurous attitude! So why not pick somewhere remote with no cell reception!”

Favorite part of your gown: “The dress! Wow, I loved it the second I saw it. The sleeves and lace details blew me away and it truly made me feel like a bride.”

Three words to describe your day: “Intimate, hopeful and calm”

How they proposed: “Zachary and I love to hike! One day in January (one of the coldest months of the year) he decided he wanted to take me on a surprise hike! We drove out to Healy from Fairbanks where we got bundled up and hiked down a frozen river through a ravine and back up a hillside. On the way back he suggested we stop and take a few pictures and set up his camera on the tripod and began to dance with me on this ice-covered rock. He carefully got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife! It truly was such a special day I will remember forever! We got to have the two-hour car ride back just full of excitement back into town to tell our families the good news!”

Any other fun memories/moments from the day: “I remember feeling so calm the night before and so at peace knowing that I was about to marry my best friend! The day of the wedding was no different. I was just overwhelmed with joy and excitement! No hiccup could detour my day, including when we forgot my dress and had to wait for someone to leave the wedding sight and go back into town to retrieve it. My wedding day was an absolutely blissful experience and we are so fortunate to have found one another!”
